Gear skip

I have a 2009 GRR, SRAM rear derailleur and cassette, SRAM gripshifters. Recently it has developed a tendency to skip a cog when I upshift. This only happens mid-range, i.e. when I try to go from 5 to 6, it wants to skip 6 and jump right to 7. A slight twisting pressure in the downshifting direction corrects it back to the selected cog. I have not had any falls or other events that would have physically damaged the derailleur or hanger. I can't figure out why it only happens around those cogs. The bike has less than 1200 miles on it. I baby this bike, and do all maintenance myself. I keep the chain/cassette really clean and lubed with Boeshield T9. Anybody had a similar problem?
Thanks,
Robert

Robert,

It sounds like you just require a minor cable adjustment.

Try "unscrewing" the barrel adjuster on the shifter about a 1/2 turn at a time and see what happens.

Thanks, Joe. You may be right - I didn't change the adjustment yet, because the shifting is perfect on the bottom and top of the range. Its only on or near that one cog that there is a problem. Plus, this might be one of those annoying problems that doesn't show up on the repair stand! I thought I'd post the question before I mess with the adjuster, in case anyone has experienced something similar.

I had a similar problem and had 3 different people try to adjust it, but just moved the skip up and down the cogs.

It turned out that I needed to replace the cable and rear housing. The cable needs to move freely for the indexing to work properly. Now no more skipping.

My cable had about 3000 miles on it.
