Quieter fairing

Not long ago, someone wrote a thread on using a black bungy cord as a lower mount to quiet down the road noise on a Zipper fairing. I tried it on my wifes TE and on my GRR with outstanding results. I made up an extra pair and if anyone out there wants to give it a try, I will send what I made up along with photo instructions on how I installed them. They are very easy to install and I'm positive it will reduce any noise you have with the fairing substancially. The cost of postage will probably be around $3.00. I inserted a photo to give you an idea how it works. There are two lower mounts, and two upper pieces of rubber that go between the fairing and the upper mount. I'm not asking anything for the mounts or the time it took to make them up.

I use a similar setup and recommend it. However, I do want to give one caution that has driven me crazy.

The rubber mount on my setup gives a lot in a cross wind (about 20mph) and allows the fairing to rub against the tire and/or the spokes.

I tried numerous solutions and could only fix this issue by either avoiding crosswinds or widening the fairing cut out for the wheel. The later could only be done on my carbon fiber fairing.

From what I can tell, this has been unique to me, so you might not have this problem.

I really like this idea. The roads in Michigan leave a lot to be desired, and a noisy fairing is almost enough to convince me to take it off all together. I'd like some more particulars on what size rubber bungy cord was used (thickness and length). It sounds like the rubber used on the upper mount is simply used as an insulating bushing/washer. Is that right? Same material? Thanks for your help.

Dan,

I'm also in Mich. (Detroit burbs) I've had this set up on my Fold Rush for several years and many thousands of miles.

It is the lower mount that is causing the noise to be reflected off of the faring. I left the upper mount standard (with the little rubber isolating washer on either side of the faring)

Just remove the lower metal angle mounting brackets. Cut two shorth lengths of ordinalry black bungy cord approximately the length the metal brackets would be if they were straight, or slightly longer, if you prefer. Drill a hole in each end and instlal them in place of the metal brackets. It might take a slightly longer bolt to go into the fork blade. This will allow for a small metal washer and a star washer under the bolt head. It helps keep the strap from rotating. Make it pretty snug so it compresses into the rubber, but don't over do it.

That is all there is to it. Those ordinary black bungy cords that the truckers use to fasten a tarp on a truck bed work fine. Often you find them lieing in the road when you're out on a ride.

When mounting the faring, bring the rubber up behind the faring so the ends don't bounce on the fork blades.

It makes a BIG reduction in the amount of noise transmitted and has been quite durable.

Let us know how you make out.

Joe

Noisey fairing

I used a 12 inch bungy and cut 4 inces off either end for the lower mounts and used what was left for the upper buffers. I haven't had any problems with the fairing shifting in the wind. For the price of postage, I will send the extra ones I made up to anyone interested. They really work well.

Joe,
Should have noticed we're not far from each other. Thanks for the detailed explanation. I probably have some bungies hanging in the garage that will work! I will give it a try and report back. Unfortunately, probably not until next weekend since I'm in seminars this weekend!

Thanks again. and Bentrider29, I may get in touch if I can't come up with something that works. Thanks for the kind offer you put out.

Fairing Noise

The solution to fairing noise has been discussed at length in previous posts. Check the archives from two (2) years ago. The problem is not new and the answers can usually be found without to much trouble.

Lower fairing mounts

Good tips guys - however - most people do not have fabrication skills.

For those who just want to bolt on the fairing mount and go ride - email - aerowing1@comcast.net for more info.

AeroWing makes both upper and lower fairing suspension mounts for a quite fairing ride. The mount system removes the common annoying road grind, drumming and poping sound caused from chip seal, pot holes and expansion joints. Also saves from premature cracking out around the mount holes. Even more, the mounts protect the fairing from excessive damage caused by blow over's. I just retired a fairing that was 13 yrs. old. I put Aero Wing mounts on eight years ago. I'm convenced I recieved several years more use out of the fairing because of the float the suspension system provides for the fairing.

Note: The mount system was field tested 2005 on a brutal TransAm tour. http://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/er2005

Since then the fairing mounts since have been used by bike tourist domestically and internationally.

By the way - there is no lower mount stability issue in cross winds with these

I attempted to post a picture of the mounts with out success. Google "Recumbent Aerodynamics blog" for info and pictures.
